It is a difficult time for the airline industry, but if it wants to attract passengers back onto its planes it is going to have solve a number of complex issues.

Biosafe cabins

Cabins that are designed to be cleaned: smooth surfaces with no nooks and crannies where bugs can flourish, touchless controls, the use of anti-microbial materials and certainly materials and electrical equipment that won’t be damaged by the cleaning agents.

Cost Weight Performance

Removing weight without compromising cost or performance and reducing the cost of manufacture using agile digital manufacture. This will mean the greater use of advanced composites, but also mean removing weight from the electrical subsystems

Sustainability

Reducing energy use in the aircraft has direct cost and sustainability benefits. But there are increasing regulatory and market drivers to improve the sustainability in cabin fitting and equipment: by using recyclable or bio-derived or recycled materials, or alternatively by improving the lifetime of components.

Getting people excited about flying

Making the cabins Bio-safe will help remove some the disincentives to flying, it is also necessary to get people excited by the experience of flying, reducing noise and improving seat comfort to help people get better quality sleep and improving inflight entertainment by allowing people to integrate their own electronics seamlessly. But also from the airline’s perspective making it easier and less expensive to alter the furnishings to create distinctive brand experiences.

From Q5D Technologies perspective there are a lot of opportunities here, flexible autonomous manufacturing, highly function light weight electrical systems that are integrated into structure of the cabin, the use of new materials, such as recyclable thermoplastic composites.
